Psychiatrist & Author

About My Practice

I love private practice—no committee meetings, no administration, no lectures—mostly sitting with patients and listening.

About Me

I am a psychiatrist, teacher, and author. I like to write and have published three books and numerous papers and articles, with seven translations into foreign languages. But mostly—I like to sit with patients and listen.

In The News

My comments about medical and psychiatric subjects have been quoted in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, and on CBS, ABC, and Fox news programs,
among others.

Bio

After obtaining my undergraduate degree in literature and writing, I attended medical school at Oregon Health and Sciences University. I completed my psychiatry training at the Menninger School of Psychiatry in Topeka, Kansas and joined the faculty there. Being a fourth-generation Oregonian, though, I eventually returned with my family to my home state—a great place to live—and joined the faculty of my alma mater, where I became an associate professor and taught psychotherapy for more than a decade before moving to private practice. I love private practice—no committee meetings, no administration, no lectures—mostly sitting with patients and listening.
